Fashionistas flock to Merry Hill’s celeb-inspired catwalk shows

Hundreds of shoppers gathered to watch celebrity inspired models take to the catwalk in a feast of fashion shows at Merry Hill this past weekend.

The Faces of Fashion shows were part of a two-day style extravaganza held at the shopping mall on Saturday March 26 and Sunday March 27.

Models sported the latest spring and summer looks from the High Street during a series of short catwalk shows – geared at showing shoppers how to achieve the celebrity looks of Cheryl Cole, Rihanna, Dannii Minogue and Holly Willoughby.

The shows marked the end of the centre’s campaign to find fashion fans who go the extra mile to emulate their style icon – after a recent poll carried out at the mall revealed 32 per cent of women would like to look like popstar and X Factor judge Cheryl Cole and most men questioned said they take inspiration from Oscar-winning actor Colin Firth.

Kelly Reed, Merry Hill marketing manager, said: “The Faces of Fashion shows were a huge success. It was great to see so many shoppers turn out and enjoy the shows and pick up some styling tips.”

There were also discounts galore at a host of beauty and clothing retailers across the centre as part of the fashion weekend.

X Factor dream over for ‘unforgettable’ Wagner

Dudley’s most-talked about entertainer Wagner has finally been booted off the X Factor after finding himself in the sing-off.

The wacky 54-year-old from Pensnett was given his marching orders by the judges after facing fellow over 28s contestant Mary Byrne in the weekly vote-off.

Wagner smiled his way through what was possibly his most polished performance on the ITV show – a rendition of the appropriately-titled Nat King Cole track ‘Unforgettable’.

But all four judges – Simon Cowell, Cheryl Cole, Dannii Minogue and even Wagner’s mentor Louis Walsh – opted to send the borough karate instructor home in tonight’s double elimination, which also ended drama queen Katie Waissel’s X Factor dream.

When asked if he had enjoyed himself during his time on the show – Wagner said he had but he’d missed his cat.

The singer had been the focus of a campaign by X Factor detractors who hoped Wagner would go all the way in the show and steal the coveted Christmas number one slot.

TV CHEF HOSTS BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS AT EAT CENTRAL

Tasty TV chef Gino D’Acampo was the star of the show as he hosted a special party to celebrate the first birthday of Merry Hill’s Eat Central food destination.

Gino blew out the birthday candles before treating fans to two live cookery demonstrations in the popular dining destination, which opened 12 months ago.

The birthday celebrations attracted hundreds of people to Eat Central, which boasts 17 restaurants and eateries from Pizza Express and Nando’s, to innovative new formats including Caribbean Scene and Tiffinbites.

Italian chef Gino, who won the last series of ‘I’m a Celebrity…’, whipped up the crowd with two live demos, including a French bean salad and pasta with Genoese basil pesto. He also signed copies of his new book, Gino’s Pasta, at Waterstones.

Kelly Reed, marketing manager at Merry Hill, said: “We knew Gino was going to go down a storm because of the buzz he caused on Merry Hill’s social media networks, but we were delighted with the whole day.

“It’s been a fantastic 12 months and there was no better way to mark the occasion. We’re proud to be able to offer world cusine and a completely unique dining experience like no other in the Black Country – with free parking of course!”

The celebrations kicked off a week of events at Merry Hill for parents and children alike to mark Eat Central’s birthday.

On Sunday 24th October, Fountain Square was turned into a ballroom floor with a tea dance including live music from 2pm until 4pm. Kids took centre stage during half term, including free Fireman Sam singing and dancing live shows and free meet and greets with Timmy from Timmy Time on Tuesday 26th October. On Wednesday 27th October, Merry Hill hosted a Build-a-Bear Workshop Party in support of Children of Need and on Thursday 28th October, kids joined in cookie decorating with Muffin Break.

Fans launch campaign to get Wagner to number one

The campaign is on to get Dudley’s X Factor star Wagner to win the TV talent show and to make it to the top of the charts this Christmas.

Former borough PE teacher Wagner Fiuza-Carrilho has survived three live shows on the top ITV competition – and now an army of fans, supporters and anti-X Factor campaigners are hoping he’ll go all the way.

The 54-year-old Pensnett performer was voted through by fans on last Sunday night’s vote off show after racing through an energetic medley of Spice Girls’ hit Spice Up Your Life and Ricky Martin’s Livin La Vida Loca on Saturday’s ‘guilty pleasures’ themed show.

Judge Cheryl Cole was lost for words after the routine – which saw Wagner accompanied by an array of scantily clad female dancers. While Simon Cowell criticised judge and mentor Louis Walsh’s song choice.

But loyal fans lapped it up and are now on a mission to get the Brazilian born singer from Blewitt Street through to the final and to steal the coveted Christmas number one slot.

Long-time pal Jay Lalsheta, who works at Dudley Leisure Centre, said: “Wagner is a total legend. I would love him to win the X Factor.

“The man has such a kind heart and oozes charisma. He is very special and once his operatic voice comes into play, you will see the true X Factor winner. We really need everyone to vote for him.

“He is totally overwhelmed by the support and love the public in the Midlands is giving him and has promised to work even harder this week in response to the affection people have shown.”

Wagner fever has also been sweeping the country, with articles galore appearing in national newspapers every day. TV comic Harry Hill also declared the eccentric crooner his favourite on last week’s TV Burp show.

Wagner is also proving popular with X Factor detractors determined to echo last year’s successful Facebook campaign which saw US rockers Rage Against The Machine hijack the Christmas number one from 2009 X Factor winner Joe McElderry.

A campaign on the social networking site, Wagner to win X Factor, has already attracted more than 4,000 supporters.

One contributor wrote: “If you just fancy a really crazy Xmas number 1 this year… vote Wagner!!! If you despise all what the X Factor stands for, vote Wagner!”

Another reads: “Let’s get Wagner to win! would be v. funny!!!! – Jedward eat your hearts out!!!! X Factor Protest – Wagner to win.”

The twice divorced Black Country karate instructor had reportedly resigned himself to being axed on Sunday after he allegedly slated the show as a set-up in an answer phone message leaked to the press.

But fans rallied round and voted him through, sparing him the dreaded sing-off which saw soulful John Adeleye booted off after the judges opted to save University of Wolverhampton student Treyc Cohen.

Controversial Wagner, who has taken a shine to fellow over 28s contestant Mary Byrne, is now gearing up for his fourth live performance on the show – although the long-haired ladies’ man is reported to have had his wrists slapped by programme-makers over claims by female contestants and a make-up artist that he was being too touchy-feely.

Flamboyant Wagner, however, has put his behaviour down to Brazilian exuberance.

While friend Richard Nock, from Quarry Bank, said: “I don’t believe the stories about him groping contestants. He is a ladies’ man, but not like that. He’s a touchy person, but not a groper.”
